Lesson plan

Setting the scene

Introduce the activity

“Today, we’re going to help Mazaam’s sea lions make a magnificent necklace.”

Activity

1. Go over the concept of harmony by distinguishing between consonant and dissonant sounds.

2. Give a piece of string and some pearls to each child.

3. Play the third game in the World of Sea Lions module with the children.

Depending on the level of the class, either as a group or individually, identify the musical piece that is different from among those presented.

  • If the harmony of the different piece is consonant, the child strings a pink pearl.

  • If the harmony of the different piece is dissonant, the child strings a mauve pearl.

4. At the end of the game, compare the necklaces and count the number of consonant and dissonant pieces of music heard.

To go further
